Rise of the Roman and Persian Empire Throughout history many civilizations have risen and fallen without so much of a second thought from historians. However there have been civilizations that climbed to the top of the metaphorical food chain and stayed there and influenced not only their region but the world for countless millennium even after they were no longer a functioning empire. Two such empires were the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire. The first factor to consider when thinking of successful empires would be geographical location. The second factor would have to be the leadership, and the third would have to be the method in which the empire expands. All of these factors are what makes a small civilization with great potential a formidable empire that lasts longer than a lifetime. The best place to the start has been and will always be the beginning. The beginning in this case is the earth, the geographical qualities that a land holds can do wonders for the way a civilization not only defends themselves but how they develop agriculturally and socially. A geographical location that is open and allows trades with neighboring societies can promote a sense of community that leads to less fighting and more diplomatic solutions, while a more isolated society may believe that other civilizations can only be destroyed, conquered, and their people sold into slavery. Mid-Range Theory Application Identified Problem I am currently employed in the Veteran’s Affairs Loma Linda HCS in the Emergency Department. Our target population are adults, mainly male, with multiple on-going health conditions. In our ED, we see a huge volume of veterans who have chronic illnesses and conditions. I noticed that many re-peat ED visits that could have been easily avoided and prevented. Some are legitimate emergencies and urgencies, but unfortunately the great majority are the result of non-compliance, lack of adequate knowledge in managing illness and failure to partner with their care provider to promote better overall health. As a one of Freud’s students, Erik Erikson was not convinced by Freud’s psychosexual stage of development, which lead to the development of his theory of psychosocial stages of development (Arnett, 2015). Within Erikson’s theory there are eight different stages with different life crisis to be resolved. Not resolving the conflicts would lead to an unhealthy personality, which causes many pro and cons within Erikson’s theory (Engler, 2013). Obedience is when society influences where/ when an individual acts in response to a direct order from another individual, who is usually the authority figure. It is assumed that without such an order the person would not have acted in this way. In order to obey authority, the obeying person has to accept that it is legitimate for the command to be made of them. Obedience involves a hierarchy of status. We were given the  task  to clean up each of the blocks within the resident’s area of HOME. We were the sweeping floor, mopping floors, cleaning fan and window, cleaning ceiling as well as wiping dust. After we had cleaned each of the dorms, we were cleaning the benches and armrest along the corridor. On the whole, we shared out the work and helped each other in order to complete our jobs as quickly as possible. In the afternoon at 12 p.m., Ms. Tan allowed us to had our lunch outside. After having lunch, we cut the vanilla pandan fruitcake into small pieces and distributed to the senior citizens. They were really surprised that we will buy the cake for them. We also chat with them and singing their favorite song together. They really enjoyed it and clapped  enthusiastically. As far as I am concerned, they were indeed remarkable and impressive. Soon, it was time to leave. We all said goodbye to the senior citizens. They seem so sad that we were going back so soon. In addition, we also had contributed a total amount of RM 200 for HOME. By using this money, we bought a 2kg of vanilla pandan fruitcake which cost about RM 104. Besides, we also bought some daily needs for HOME, namely, canned sardines, soap powder, toilet paper, instant noodles, baked beans, etc. The donation receipt from HOME, the receipt of the vanilla pandan fruitcake and daily needs are shown at appendix. Moreover, we were socializing and befriend with the residents of HOME. We make sure that the residents are well treated with respect, kindness, and dignity. Evaluation and recommendations To be honest, I never thought about how amazing my visit to the old folk home would be. After greeting the senior citizen and talking to them one-on-one, I was very surprised by how appreciative they were for our visit. Maybe they felt lonely or abandoned before, but now the tears of joy in their eyes are shining. Perhaps everyone needs to know that they are really care of, even if it is a simple stranger. After that, I was shocked by their optimism about the future, even if they were old. Their spirit is so young. Even if they are wheelchair users, they are selfless. It tells me that even in old age, happiness can exist, whether it is a frustrating situation or a decrease in health. To conclude, this visit left a profound impact, memorable and interesting. Our consciousness and our profound influence on us. We are more sensitive than when we arrive; sensitive to the elderly. This visit is an epiphany.
